a bank where the wild thyme blows

"I know a bank where the wild thyme blows, Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows, Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine, With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine: There sleeps Titania sometime of the night, Lull'd in these flowers with dances and delight;" - "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

Book Reviews - Karen Marie Moning - Fever series

News Alert!!  KMM: (Mar-2016) "FEVERSONG is the final conclusion for the entire 9 books Fever Series. In FEVERSONG, I wrap up what I began a decade ago in DARKFEVER.

I recently signed with Random House to do two more books set in the Fever World, to be published after FEVERSONG but they are different. FEVERSONG is the end of many things.  http://karenmoning.com/uncategorized/ask-kmm-march-2016/ "2

Me:  Whaaat?  Oh--NOOOOOO!!!   This is like a friend died!!
My heart is breaking, I love ALL these characters sooo much!!  They are all so majestic. Tell me it's not true!!    Real-life relationships take a lot more work, time, and sometimes it's a slow-fermentation in a wine barrel while the other characters ride to the front of the stage.
Mac and Barrons I absolutely adore.  Barrons has been a cranky old-bachelor & alone so long, I'm sure he, Mac or their dangerous circumstances is capable of destroying their relationship a few more times--allowing them to break-up, "re-earn", reboot it & super-hot-make-ups.  I'd love to see them keep reappearing, revisiting the series.

I'd love to see Cruce & Darroc create and earn their own redemptions after a long, humiliating and painful comeuppance.   (God knows, there's two ways for Darroc to come back, either through "the Book" or all that Unseelie fae-flesh he ate.)  Both, in their alien ways sometimes tried surprisingly very hard to do what they think the "right thing", even if it didn't fit with Human standards, of which, they are pretty clueless about.  Humans have only been around for a microsecond of Fae existence, it'd be like us worrying what the bacteria thinks of us, so Cruce or Darroc spending even a microsecond considering the human race or individual humans is huge sign for their future potentials.

I'd love to see more Dani, Ryo, LOR!!! (OMG-LOR!), Kasteo, MacKeltars, Dageus, Christian, Dancer, Kat, and Jo (she's proved to be quite a little hilarious manipulator), interspersed throughout the books to stretch-out the Fever-universe.

I'm hoping I get to see all the characters get the chance or the luxury to experience real-life issues no matter how everyday-mundane they seem to us:  Pregnancies, Kids, houses, in-laws, and baddies that swoop-in and attack during life's-vulnerabilities.  And, IF or how they can train themselves out of their knee-jerk homicidal ways if people get "too close".

I love-love this series and the Fever-universe that the author has created.  The dialogue is fun, characters are well done, the imagery is epic, movie-like and amazing.  The imagery flying with the hunters or with the ancient Fae king are wonderful.

I understand Mac, the initial main character is on a self-growth-journey.  Book #1 she is very sheltered and child-like, is a Barbie-doll/Legally Blonde cliche, has a lot of growing-up to-do, and she does develop further.   Also, all the other characters are as well.  I'm hoping they all get their chances for growth, which to be believable, can't happen over-night or in a one-book-wrapup.

Fever Series

Story Structure

Review & a touch of Spoiler

Darkfever (Fever, #1)
published 2006
ISBN 978-0-440-24098-3
Per KMM Blog: 1
Begin Story Arc #1 1
MacKayla, a purposely very-sheltered, Barbie-pink obsessed/Legally Blonde cliche girl’s world is shattered when her sister is murdered.  When the murder investigation hits quicksand, she, the pink-Southern-Belle-avenger, storms Ireland to see if she can start making-it-happen.  She runs into more than she dreamed of: a dangerous, dark & handsome man (Jerricho Barrons), and the Fae, some of which are deadly dangerous, others wickedly, hilariously naughty (V’Lane).  MacKayla “Mac” can’t tell which one will help her or kill her. She seems to be changing and growing as well.

Iced (Fever, #6)
published 2012
ISBN 0440246415
Begin Story Arc #2
KMM: “ICED was my DARKFEVER, setting the stage and engaging emotion where I wanted it"1
KMM–Nov 19, 2012:  "One last note about Ryodan: He will eclipse Barrons. Blot him right out of your soul’s sky. That’s the challenge I’ve set for myself as a writer. (God, I hate it when I do this to myself.) It won’t happen in the first book, or the second. But it will happen. And the gauntlet is flung…:)"3
Burned (Fever, #7)
published 2015
ISBN 0385344414
KMM: “BURNED is my BLOODFEVER, building the scenery and developing the nuances necessary."1
Feverborn (Fever, #8)
published 2016
KMM: “FEVERBORN is FAEFEVER & DREAMFEVER where the stakes become increasingly clear and everything goes code red."1 Speculation:

  • Skins and the Dreamy-Eyed-Guy:  Although the Unseelie King (UK) doesn't recycle his skins or extra  bodies normally, I think he was in a rush to please his concubine and try fruitlessly to save Earth, so he did recycle skins here.  Mac didn't seem to detect any difference with the Dreamy-eyed-guy (DEG) (former skin of the UK) ...on-the-otherhand,  it could've been anybody wearing a Fae Amulet, like Cruce did impersonating V'Lane.  If Jada got Cruce's cuff off him, maybe those 3 amulets got off him too.
  • Dancer could be another skin of the UK, which is why the wraiths/ZEWS won't go near him, or just pure & innocent, which would repel the wraiths as they serve the Sweeper, and it's seeking broken things to "Frankenstein". The Sweeper has already attempted to meddle with the King, so they wouldn't be chasing him.  But Dancer also could be becoming a replacement Seelie prince, as the Fae metaphysical system replaces it's missing "parts".
  • Cruce: he's not going crazy with the book inside him, maybe Mac can learn to control hers??
Feversong (Fever, #9)
expected publication 2017
KMM: "FEVERSONG concludes the second story arc. I talked about this in my August 2015 blog post.  FEVERSONG is my SHADOWFEVER, where the shit I've been stirring into a mystery and a puzzle and a pattern hits the fan and flies off the blades to take its true form. "1
End Story Arc #2
Untitled (Fever, #10)
expected publication 2017
